Well, I am sure the image of hundreds of police in riot gear on the Capitol lawn brings about that warm, fuzzy 'Minnesota Nice' feeling, right? I dare say the nice thing to do when a small group of individuals partake in property destruction is to corral a group of 300 peaceful protesters, mace them and then arrest them... Even nicer to arrest clearly credentialed press and random Sears shoppers who happened to walk out of the store and into the parking lot where police had corralled the 'criminals.' Property destruction aside, was this country not founded by oppressed peoples being vociferous in their denunciation of the oligarchs ruling them? Does this not seem relevant at present? As the first commenter on CNN's politicalticker blog alluded to, I wonder how the Boston Tea Party would be handled today. Verily the Sons of Liberty would labeled a terrorist organization and shipped directly to Guantanamo...

Okay. After watching the first of three parts of the Jonathan Miller program A History of Disbelief last night on TPT-2, I decided to dig up some of the great quotes provided throughout the program. And how about this profound outlook on death by the Greek philosopher Epicurus: Why should I fear death? If I am, then death is not. If Death is, then I am not. A part I found particularly interesting and highly pertinent today was the examination of atheism and the founding of the United States. Was this country not established to harbor a society in which the church had no place in government? I thought so... but alas! Apparently that is no longer true...

First and foremost, thank you to all who either called or text messaged me immediately after this catastrophy to see if I was okay - most Wednesdays I would be leaving the U about 6 O'clock to head back to Burnsville around the time of the collapse, over that very bridge. Secondly, I feel that the callous and indifferent attitude I had that the unfourtunate luck of encountering down in Burnsville tonight over the incident was appallaing... people snickering at the cars perched on the mangled roadway and those who were callousley worried about their commute tomorrow morning was simply abhorrent. I try to find the inherent decency in every human being but am often thwarted in that attempt. To each their own I surmise. But, to anyone out there looking to help the Red Cross is in need of blood so do your part and if you need a ride there tomorrow let me know.

In the spirit of the X-files episode of the same name, a time has come for rumination on these past months, nay years, and upon the heartening of a friend, a look forward. I have lately been dabbling in mediocrity and am eager for a change. Some would call it, albeit cliche, the good life; a house in the burbs with a nine-to-five job. While this may not be the Bohemian lifestyle most college-aged youths envision I do feel content when thinking about the future. Possibly back in Uptown for our dream home! I am very excited to marry Elisabeth and am also excited about our life together so in that spirit I am not worried about excitement in and of itself. Hope all is well with everyone out there!

Weekly Mountain Bike Ride

Well, for any mountain bikers out there, me and a cohort of guys are going to start riding every weekend at various trails around the metro (Lebanon, The Farm, Theo Wirth, etc.). Well, another Easter has come to pass. My biggest thrill was passing the ham, mashed potatoes and baked corn around the table. Oh, that and the hours of driving. I guess. Anywho, I thought some of you might enjoy the picture at the left. The caption is, "Rejoice! He is Risen!" I think it is and early christian work, probably from the middle 6th century. Well, all the footage has been assembled, playing synced up and the glow around Jesus' head had been digitally inserted with the greatest of care. That's right folks, NOFX's 'Seeing Double at the Triple Rock' video is out! The best place to watch it is at Fat Wreck Chords, but if you have a Myspace account you can also watch it in the music video section. I have only watched it a couple times but I think the only time you can see me is in the big group shots right up front with my fist in the air. Still pretty sweet.

NOFX Video Shoot

Well I figured it's about time I post something about the video shoot last week! First of all, it was fucking awesome. The shoot was fun (where else does Jesus get to crowd surf?!?). Next, as you can see, the band was walking around and very friendly and talked to all of us, i.e. the 'three amigos' pic with Zach, Fat Mike and I. But most importantly, the boys played for about an hour after the shoot and pretty much got up on stage and asked us what to play and I swear Zach and I called two-thirds of the songs. Ohyeah -- for anyone who has never heard the entire Decline played at a show, wow is all I have to say. It was amazing. There are a few more pics on NOFX's Bore Journal with more to come I am sure, and I as well will be posting a like to all of mine. Yay!

Banana assault nets arrest
Police arrested an 18-year-old Fergus Falls man at the Lakeview Estates Trailer Park after he allegedly hit a woman with a banana. Police responded to the home Tuesday night on a report of a fight. A woman said that the man tried to take a swing at her and missed, and she responded by slapping him in the face. That's when the woman said the man grabbed a banana and clubbed her with it, police said. Police said there was banana debris at the scene to corroborate the assault. The woman was cited for disorderly conduct; the man was taken into custody for fifth degree assault.

Wow. In a letter to the editor in today's MN Daily, there is a genius who seems to think the GOP is gaining power in this country and that Bush is the greatest president since Lincoln. Now that is just delusional...

A Successful Holiday Week!

After traveling to Fairmont, MN, Brookings, SD, Cedar Falls, IA and then back to Minneapolis for New Years I think I am done traveling for a spell. I would have to say that one of the highlights of the past week was the nearly 9 foot tall Triumphant Arch that my brother Adam and I built in my Mom's yard. There are a few more pictures in my facebook pictures. Nothin' like a mechanical engineer and art history major playing in the snow!

Good for us! Thanks to some support those sneaky republicans did not get an arctic drilling bill passed that was snuck into the defense bill. Here's what John Kerry had to say via email about it:

If anyone happens to read this before 10:00pm, it is Ken Barlow's Last day as meteorologist for Kare11 News. There will be a little farewell piece at 10 so tune in. They tried to handcuff him so he would stay (right) but I do not think that would work. We'll all miss the jokes from the Backyard and urgent weather alerts. Keep up the good work out East.

On another note, ID took a hard hit today as judge ruled that 'Religious alternative' to evolution cannot be taught in public school classes. Yay!
The the Discovery Institute released their own statement which is pretty humorous to read. (Both articles from a heads up at Pharyngula)

Case of the Mondays

Hooray for Monday. Just kidding. Did anyone else who watched Bush's address last night think it sounded like he almost admitted he fucked up and the "war" in Iraq is not going well? Silly monkey!

On another note I put a hole in my bumper this weekend in a parking ramp downtown the got my car stuck on a snow pile in my won parking lot. Real smooth. Maybe I should not drive any more! Or just be a little more careful. If anyone talks to Santa at the mall let him know I need a new bumper, a 15" Powerbook and for my credit card bills to disappear! Oh, and some Holly Nog and Bailey's. Yummy.

Daily Finals Edition Out

Well, it's that time of year again - Daily Finals Edition!
There are pdf versions of the front pages of sections A and B, as well as an interactive Windows XP clone (yuck!) of the entire Finals Edition. One of the things you will not find in the online version, however, are the Chuck Norris facts and "The Adventures of Taft", a number of cartoons featuring our corpulent former president.

Here are the Norris facts and euphemisms for those of you unfortunate enough not to be able get your paws on the print version:
1) If you can see Chuck Norris, he can see you. If you can't see Chuck Norris you may be only seconds away from death.
2) Chuck Norris' tears cure cancer. Too bad he has never cried.
3) The grass is always greener on the other side, unless Chuck Norris has been there. In that case the grass is most likely soaked in blood and tears.
4) The chief export of Chuck Norris is pain.

There are also two small harrowing pictures of Chuck with the captions:
1) What are you staring at? Don't make me take you out.
2) Can you feel the Chuck?

I recommend the print version however, the Chuck pictures are priceless! (Or at least worthy of taping to your bedroom/dormroom/office door.)

Well, I managed to tear away from my studies for a few seconds so that no one thinks I am not going to keep posting here!
Not much more than a week of the semester left so it should be busy. Put my christmas tree up last night. It's a little small but looks good. My betta died the other day and that was, but he almost made it a year which is not too shabby. I'll miss him! Hopefully everyone has done their shopping for me by now ;-) I should really start, but what would be the fun of that?

Worse yet is that these people live in a little bubble wherein the school themselves at home or in private prep school, go to a college such as Patrick Henry College and then get jobs in Washington working for the 'Moral Majority'!?

Here's a great blog for anyone who thinks Intelligent Design is a bunch of creationist twaddle:

It is run by PZ Meyers, a developmental biologist at the University of Minnesota Morris, who has repeatedly shown how the ID crap that is being slung these days is just that - crap.
There is also lots of humorous biology stuff (kinky mating habits of giant quid, for instance) and other generally intelligent stuff. Have fun!
